The old-fashioned book review: “shaky, moribund, or in the advanced stages of rigor mortis”?

For those who were unable to attend the Columbia Journalism Review panel on the vanishing book review, you can read worthwhile reports by Ed Champion and James Marcus. Be prepared to block out some time, especially if you intend to read the piece that got the ball rolling, Steve Wasserman’s “Goodbye to All That.” (And if you really want to dig into it, here’s the podcast.)
As the discussion seemed to center more on the woes of newspaper book reviews than on the perceived battle vs. the blogs, I’ll limit my commentary to an observation that these two good BookPeople ™–yea, verily, they are members of the “Litblogosphere”–are clearly performing an act of journalism, one that likely goes beyond the similar efforts of any print publication. (Though I may be wrong; I haven’t checked.)
