As the reviewer of this "memoir" for Booklist, I have to say I'm shocked. She could have written the book as a second hand account, gathering stories from those whose lives she was moved by. And what's wrong with writing a novel anyway? The works of Dickens and Sinclair certainly prove what a powerful medium fiction is for pointing out societal ills.

A deep sigh. Book review editors and reviewers have to trust publishers to at least categorize their books responsibly. Hoaxes like this threaten that relationship and taint a genre that comprises, when written with integrity and care, a rich facet of literature and cultural history as it illuminates fascinating lives. I'm reading a family history/slash memoir right that is carefully researched, and in which the writer distinguishes between her percpetions and memories and verifiable fact. Fakes like Love and Consequences betray our instinct for empathy and faith in a writer's mission.
