Hurray for Richard Hugo. I was a sophomore in college when he came to my campus to read/recite. I had little knowledge of poetry and can't remember what prompted me to attend. It was electrifying. He recited most of his work from memory and, as a kid from Wyoming who had never encountered poetry about crummy little towns on the high plains like the ones I knew, I was hooked. Start with The Lady in Kicking Horse Reservoir and go from there.
