Don’t ask me why I was looking at Art Garfunkel‘s Web site this morning–hey, I said “don’t ask”!

I knew you would ask.

OK, I was writing the “teaser” text for a “Noteworthy” review on the Booklist Online home page (for the book Impossible, by Nancy Werlin):

If the song “Scarborough Fair” brings to mind the version performed by a certain 1960s singing duo, check out Nancy Werlin’s reinterpretation: a book called Impossible, about “all sorts of melodramatic, ridiculous, but true things” that happen to 17-year-old Lucy Scarborough.

And I was trying to remember whether that song had been a Garfunkel lead vocal, not a Simon, but of course they sang it together (as evidenced by YouTube), and never mind. But the real discovery was this: Art Garfunkel’s cyber library:

Since the 1960′s, Art Garfunkel has been a voracious reader.  We are pleased to present a listing of every book Art has read over the last 40 years.   To view a list of Art Garfunkel’s favorite books, go to Favorites. This book list has been divided into several pages to allow easy downloading.  Each page indicates the author, title, date of publication and number of pages (when available)

Number of pages! My sense of delight upon learning that Art Garfunkel has spent his adult life as a bona fide “voracious reader” is tempered not only by the fact that he maintains a public list of every book he’s ever read, but also by the fact that he wants us to know how many pages he has read, as well.

Wait, he’s still alive, right? I’m not chortling at a . . . oh, phew. He’s still alive. And you can see him on October 7 at London’s Royal Festival Hall. Between concerts he’ll be relaxing with a book, no doubt something chock full of densely worded pages.

Well, I’m a LibraryThing member and I can’t find him at ArtGarf63, or was that just a way to tempt us into reading your blog post?

  2. Keir Says:

Definitely the latter. I often type with my tongue planted firmly in my cheek. (It’s easier to type than talk at those moments.) But wouldn’t it be cool if Art Garfunkel was on LibraryThing? Maybe he is!

I’ve always been really tickled by the Garfunkology since I first stumbled on it some years back. I wish there was one for Paul Simon. Or, heck, Neil Diamond! (-:
