I would never skim the battle scenes, but I can imagine “accidentally” turning an extra page during some of the society scenes! I wonder if there’s a He Reads/She Reads column in this?

What a concept–and it would clearly keep me from skimming all the battle scenes (which is what I did when I read it in the early 70s)! There may be something to this!
