Writers on the Screen

Jerry Eberle sent me this item from Gawker, in which their frequent target Jay McInerney (A Hedonist in the Cellar, 2006) is said to be doing a cameo on the next season of Gossip Girl.
Matthew Settle, who plays Pa Humphrey on the New York City-set teen soap about the sadness and mystery of money, says that ol’ Jay will be playing a mentor to Dan, a strapping DUMBO teen who aspires to be a writer (he’s already been published in The New Yorker! Fist bump!)
Setting aside the ridiculousness of film and television depictions of writing (novelists always have homes that only doctors could afford), this does suggest a good topic: as Jerry puts it, “the best and worst author cameos in film and/or television.”
I’m thinking Kurt Vonnegut in Rodney Dangerfield’s Back to School. Classic.
How ’bout Hunter S. in Fear and Loathing?
OK, I’m trying to think of some more. Help me out here . . . .
