The Alexie Factor
Posted by: Keir Graff

Guests on the Colbert Report, Stephen Colbert’s spoof of the O’Reilly Factor, sometimes have just as much trouble facing Stephen Colbert as others do Bill O’Reilly–for completely different reasons, of course. O’Reilly often shouts and interrupts, making it hard for people to get a word in edgewise. Colbert interrupts, too–his satire is wickedly accurate–but more often, his humor leaves guests fumbling for a reply. When Sherman Alexie (The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, 2007) visited the show recently, it was Colbert who struggled to keep up–and was ultimately rendered speechless.

They never did get around to talking about the book, did they?

    It was funny!

  2. Julie Says:

Alexie is great. His interview on Nancy Pearl’s podcast was so good that it got me motivated to read The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian — excellent book and definitely not only for young adults.

  3. Keir Says:

Yes, I’m a fan, too. I haven’t read TATDOFPTI yet, but Ten Little Indians is a fan-tastic collection.

  4. Jena Says:

but does Colbert ever actually discuss the books? I don’t think he even reads them (unlike Jon Stewart, who I’m pretty sure does).

  5. Keir Says:

Good point, Jena. Colbert (the character, anyway) is on the record as saying he doesn’t trust books–he trusts his gut.

And if you like Alexie, you absolutely must listen to the audiobook (Recorded Books) of ATDOAPTI. Alexie reads it and at first you think what is this as his cadence and speech patterns are a bit different. But then the story and his reading totally suck you in.
