Happy Birthday, Hungry Caterpillar
Posted by: Laura Tillotson
It may seem a little ironic given that my son has a feeding tube, but one of our favorite bedtime books is Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Something about all that gluttony is just plain entertaining, whether you are a big eater or not so much.
Penguin is celebrating the 40th anniversary of this picture-book classic with a slew of free stuff for teachers and librarians. In case you didn’t know, March 20 is “Very Hungry Caterpillar Day,” and you can download a poster and activity booklet with lots of ideas for marking the day. If you’d like a kit mailed to you (including temporary tattoos!), send an e-mail with your mailing address to schoolandlibrary@us.penguingroup.com. Also look for The Very Hungry Caterpillar Pop-up Book, available next month.
After I get my caterpillar tattoo properly affixed on the 20th, I plan on digging into “one piece of chocolate cake, one ice-cream cone, one pickle, one slice of Swiss cheese, one lollipop, one piece of cherry pie, one sausage, one cupcake, and one slice of watermelon.” Care to join me?
