As an author of historical fiction, I "have to" believe that the genre is still thriving. I agree with the comments made by T.J. Banks. I am also a history teacher at the high school level, and have seen the effect that a good novel (such as All Quiet on the Western Front) can have in making a particular era or subject more approachable for a young person. My new novel is entitled THE FUHRER VIRUS. It is a WWII spy/conspiracy/thriller for adolescent and adult readers and can be found at www.eloquentbooks.com/TheFuhrerVirus.html, www.amazon.com, and www.barnesandnoble.com.

Thanks!

Some years ago, I was told by an agent that it was pointless to pursue historical fiction since it was so unfashionable. Within a couple of years it was hugely fashionable again and I think it is a genre that will always have wide appeal even if that appeal sometimes goes through brief dips. Considering the huge popularity of period dramas and historical documentaries on television, it is clear that there is an endless fascination with the past, and consequently, historical fiction will always be 'hot'.

As a published writer and lifelong reader, I believe that historical fiction is still a very much alive genre for young adult readers. I say this remembering myself devouring stories about the Plantagenets, Tudors, and Stuarts at that age and seeing my teenage daughter do the same with various historical novels assigned to her in junior high and high school. Such novels make history more accessible to kids who might be put off/overwhelmed/terrified by straight history initially.
