Early Adolescence
Posted by: Gillian Engberg

In her health blog for The New York Times this week, Tara Parker-Pope discussed adolescence’s earlier onset in European girls. This echoes a much-reported trend in America, where eight is now considered a “normal” age for the first signs of puberty to show up in girls. All of this raises questions about the best books to give these young girls, who may not be ready to read about the full details of sex education, but who still want solid, reassuring information about what’s happening (or about to happen) to their bodies. Lynda Madaras’ Ready, Set, Grow! A What’s Happening to My Body? Book for Younger Girls is a great place to start. I’d love to hear more suggestions of books (or Web sites) that answer questions about puberty for this growing number of seven- to nine-year-olds. Any ideas?
