In a former life, I interviewed movie stars. I can tell you what Russell Crowe smells like, what Neve Campbell drinks, and what Ben Kingsley would really rather be talking about. But here’s the main revelation: hanging out with movie stars, as it turns out, is kind of a drag.

Which is why, these days, I really appreciate it when an interview becomes the funnest part of my day. Such was the case with Lauren Myracle–when our time was up, I would’ve liked to have busted out the pop and Doritos and invited her to an all-day Lifetime movie marathon. It helped, of course, that I was a huge fan of last year’s Bliss. Man, that book is creeeeeeeeepy.

I’m also a fan of her take on book challenges, something which she has become all too familiar with. In the below video, she details her technique to defuse irate grown-ups, but also doesn’t deny that the attacks hurt a little, too. This honesty carries through to her self-assessment of her days as a middle school teacher, where some misplaced sarcasm led her to conclude that she was “a crappy human being.” Well, you watch the video and judge for yourself. But me, I’m fairly certain that’s a harsh assessment.
