Hans Christian Andersen and the Olympics
Posted by: Laura Tillotson
In case you’ve been living in a hole (or buried under a pile of work like me), maybe you haven’t heard about the 2010 Hans Christian Andersen Award nominees for the U.S. This award is for an author or illustrator’s complete body of works, and the selection process sort of resembles how the Olympics committee chooses the next city for the games (go Chicago 2016!). IBBY (that’s the International Board on Books for Young People) invites its national sections to each submit an author and illustrator nominee, and then an international jury picks the winners.

This year the U.S. section has nominated Walter Dean Myers in the author category and Eric Carle in the illustrator category, two rock stars of children’s literature if you ask me. So slam dunk for America, right? Not so fast when you see who they’re up against: Eoin Colfer and P. J. Lynch (from Ireland), David Almond and Michael Foreman (from the UK), and Switzerland’s Etienne Delessert (interestingly, the Swiss didn’t nominate an author–maybe they couldn’t come up with a second entrance fee with the bad economy).

I’m still going with either Myers or Carle though, or maybe even both. After all, it’s been 11 years since the last American HCA winner (Katherine Paterson). The time is ripe (just like Chicago for 2016!).
