Our school had a snow day and most of this third-grade class had watched the inaugaration. I shared with the class that the same situation had happened to me as a student on the day of President Kennedy’s inaugaration. I said that many of the circumstances were similar because the newly elected men had faced discrimination. They ask why, and I told them JFK was Catholic. One boy said, “What difference did that make”. My voice wavered and my eyes watered as I tried to answer, and I finally said, that I hope that by the time those children are my age, someone will ask that same question about President Obama’s race.
