Updates from the World of Youth

suess3Lots of news in the last week, and I’m finally getting out from under some deadlines to write about it. First up, SLJ and LJ have been sold to Ohio-based Media Source, the company that recently bought The Horn Book and also owns Junior Library Guild. What does this mean for the world of library review journals? We’ll see, but it does sound like no one from New York or Boston will be moving to Dublin, Ohio, at least for the moment.

Becoming a lawyer was a childhood dream for me (not kidding). Fortunately, my tax lawyer father talked me out of that crazy idea. But hearing that John Grisham is writing children’s books—not surprisingly, about the legal profession—is exciting. To be published by Penguin Young Readers Group, the first of the two-book series is called Theodore Boone: Kid Lawyer and will be out in May.

Finally, take a few minutes and contribute to a great wave of children’s literature energy today. It’s Dr. Seuss’ birthday and also Read across America Day, the National Education Association’s annual reading celebration. I plan to crack open the current family favorite as soon as I get home tonight: Rattletrap Car by Phyllis Root.
