Book Trailer Thursday: The Dead-Tossed Waves
Posted by: Daniel Kraus
I’ve been fortunate enough to review both of Carrie Ryan’s horror/romance/action/post-apocalypse/period-drama zombie books. What I like about them (aside from the way they pull off that fivefold-hyphenate) is that they take zombies seriously. So seriously, in fact, that the z-word is not used; rather, the undead are “the Unconsecrated” or “the Mudo.” Classy, huh?
(Another thing I like about these books: their titles. The Forest of Hands of Teeth? The Dead-Tossed Waves? Are these not the coolest titles ever? Other authors should hire out Ryan’s services in this department.)
It’s with relief that I report that the trailer to The Dead-Tossed Waves does just about everything right in attracting its core audience. This production likely didn’t have a big budget, yet it generates a big-budget impact with smart shot compositions, great sound effects, and snappy editing that puts a pair of smitten lovers on a collision course with a panting, lurching monster. It also doesn’t hurt that the video has an interesting setting (a rusty amusement park), an unusual backdrop (mud + snow), and an atmospheric time of day (dusk). Trailer-makers, take note.
Verdict: Tastes good.

Despite the “taking zombies seriously” thing, both of us managed to neglect mentioning your post from earlier this week, featuring a book that takes thing in the other direction:

This is a better trailer. And, I suspect, a better book.

Strange how a 1:30 book trailer can send me under the table. My family has a *real* fear of zombies. Even The Husband says, “You know how much I hate zombies”. I plan to read this at the dinner table.

That may be the best book trailer I’ve ever watched! It definitely makes me want to pick up the book immediately, read it, and then have to sleep with the lights on all night.

Awesome trailer! So interesting to see the setting and hear what the narrator is saying, compared to reading the first book.
And I totally agree with you about the titles. They are made of awesome.

First thing that grabbed my attention was the teen voice over. Instantly sets in my mind the target audience for the book, and intrigues me: is this who the narrator might be? is she the POV? Suspense building in the trailer was well choreographed too, the music was a good mood-setter and well matched to the building suspense. Trailer has some artistic touches that I liked with the abandoned amusement park as the backdrop at dusk. Looking forward to the book.
