2010 Edgar Award Winners Announced
Posted by: Courtney Jones
Nine authors were honored last night at a banquet in New York and took home a bust of Edgar Allan Poe. Writers usually have no problem knowing what to do with a cash prize, but a few will probably feel ill at ease with their creepy little statuette. The uncertain would do well to turn to last year’s Best Young Adult Book winner John Green for suggestions. Anyway, here are the results:
Best novel
The Last Child, by John Hart
Best first novel
In the Shadow of Gotham, by Stefanie Pintoff
Best paperback original
Body Blows, by Marc Strange
Best critical/biographical
The Lineup: The World’s Greatest Crime Writers Tell the Inside Story of Their Greatest Detectives, edited by Otto Penzler
Best fact crime
Columbine, by Dave Cullen
Best short story
“Amapola,” by Luis Alberto Urrea in Phoenix Noir
Best young adult
Reality Check, by Peter Abrahams
Best juvenile
Closed for the Season, by Mary Downing Hahn
S&S/Mary Higgins Clark Award
Awakening, by S.J. Bolton

I’ve definitely carped about the ugliness of the Poe bust, too – but that was before I saw one in real life. Having seen Mr. Green’s Poe in person, I have to say that photography doesn’t do this award justice. It’s kinda cool in 3-D.

John Hart’s ‘The Last Child’ won best novel, not The Odds. Might want to correct that.
