Book Trailer Thursday: Go, Mutants!
Posted by: Daniel Kraus
Larry Doyle’s very funny Go, Mutants! takes place in an alternate American past, where chicks in poodle skirts and punks in black leather jackets share the high school hallways with all sorts of gooey, tentacled aliens, who landed on the planet and were assimilated 20 years earlier.
Doyle is an acolyte of the sci-fi shockers of the 50s and 60s, evidence of which which fairly drips from each giddy sentence. Thankfully, when it came time to make the book trailer, he didn’t forget about all of these movies, which are sitting out there, many of them in the public domain, just waiting to be book trailerized.
“An alienated teen . . . ,” the trailer begins, along with a shot of James Dean (with his head replaced by a mutant with a giant brain). “An atomic ape . . . ,” the trailer continues, along with a shot of Marlon Brando (with his head replaced by ape whom we’ll assume is atomic). You see where this is going. Soon the drive-in hyperbole kicks in with scratchy old footage: “Horror!” “Death and Desire!” “Paralyzing Terror!” (If you dig this jive, go to the book’s official website, which is chock full of similarly paralyzingly terrifying montages.)
Verdict: More, please. If they make this book into a movie (which they might, considering the Hollywood success of Doyle’s I Love You, Beth Cooper), they better shoot it in 16mm black-and-white, that’s all I’m saying.
