Reading the Screen: Spielberg’s War Horse
Posted by: David Pitt

According to this story at firstshowing.net, Stephen Spielberg is directing an war-horseadaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s War Horse (1982), a children’s novel about Albert, a young British farm boy, and Joey, his friend, who’s sold to the army and sent off to serve in the First World War.

Don’t panic: Joey’s a horse, not a boy. He narrates the story, and it’s quite the exciting story, too: among other things, Joey is captured by the Germans, and is reunited (on the battlefield) with Albert.

War Horse, which has already been adapted to radio and the stage, sounds like perfect material for Mr. Spielberg, who has a real knack for telling touching , dramatic stories with an element of fantasy. And having the director’s name attached to it virtually guarantees the book a wider audience.
