Reading the Screen: True Grit Approaches

I mentioned a while ago — if you missed that post, it’s here – that Joel and Ethan Coen, the excellent writing/directing team, are doing a new version of Charles Portis’ 1968 novel True Grit. The trailer is now online, and here it is:
I might be biased, because I’m such a fan of the Coens, but it looks like it’s going to be a great flick.

My dad, born & raised in Ft. Smith AR and son of a Federal Marshall whose assignment was the Indian Territory (both True Grit settings), laughed himself sick about the old John Wayne version, which was clearly shot in California mountains – not the true landscape. I hope the Coens got that part right!

Various internet sources seem to indicate the movie was filmed (at least in part) in New Mexico and Texas. Which is much better than California.
But, hey, with today’s CGI they could film the movie in my backyard — Nova Scotia — and make it look like Arkansas. (Or Mars, for that matter.)
I definitely understand your point, but I think we can trust the Coens to make sure the movie looks geographically accurate.
