IC-SPAN: Why Stop There?
Posted by: Ilene Cooper
President Obama’s brand-new children’s book, Of Thee I Sing: A Letter to My Daughters, illustrated by Loren Long, is an ode to the creativity, generosity, and pluck of 13 famous Americans as well as an inclusionary invitation to children to feel part of the American family. Among the profiled are Helen Keller, George Washington, Martin Luther King, and Neil Armstrong. Another subject is Sitting Bull, which prompted Fox Nation to headline its article, “Obama Praises Indian Chief Who Killed U.S. General.” Uh, actually, the consensus candidate is Sitting Bull’s nephew, White Bull. But why stop there? Billie Holiday is one of the subjects, too. So how about, “Obama Praises Prostitute/Heroin Addict?” And Dr. King had some personal peccadillos. Want to go there? I guess George Washington is safe, but Abraham Lincoln? “Obama Praises Depressive, Unattractive Man.” But Fox Nation probably would like this one when it comes to Jackie Robinson: “Obama Praises Republican.”

But is George Washington really safe? “Obama praises environment-defacing vandal.”

I had a similar thought. Then again, brush-clearing has tended to meet with approval on Fox.
