Reading the Screen: A Wizard of Oz Remake?
Posted by: David Pitt

Over at Deadline, there’s an interesting story that says Robert Zemeckis, director of such films as Back to the Future, What Lies Beneath, Cast Away, and Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, is in “early talks” to remake The Wizard of Oz (1939) using the original screenplay.

The movie would be live action, not motion-capture animation, which is good news to me. The idea of using the original screenplay is a little weird, but not necessarily a bad thing: it could ensure that the story doesn’t get butchered.  (Zemeckis also directed one of the worst, most shamefully unfaithful adaptations of a novel I’ve ever seen. Any guesses which one I’m talking about?)

You may recall from an earlier post that Sam Raimi is also working on an Oz movie, a prequel to the original. If both movies actually get made, it could be an interesting time for fans of L. Frank Baum’s novel.
