Reading the Screen: The Finder, A Bones Spin-Off
Posted by: David Pitt

Bones, the popular FOX series based on the life and writings of forensic anthropologist Kathy Reichs, is being spun off. But it’s not one of the regulars who’s getting his own series, it’s a new character.

Walter Sherman, also known as the Locator, is a former military policeman who finds people who really don’t want to be found. He’s the creation of Richard Greener, whose two Locator novels, The Knowland Retribution and The Lacy Confession, were published in 2006. As far as I know there haven’t been any more Locator novels, but Greener, who underwent a heart transplant around the time the two novels were published, is a fairly prolific essayist and blogger.

Geoff Stults, who appeared in the gentle dramas 7th Heaven and October Road, has been cast as Walter Sherman in the backdoor pilot (which means that an episode of Bones, featuring the new characters, will serve as the pilot for the new show).  I’m not sure about Stults — he’ll need to convince us he has the dramatic weight for the role — but I’m thrilled that Michael Clarke Duncan will be playing Leo, Sherman’s partner/sidekick.

Apparently the new show will be called The Finder, and not the much cooler (and more appropriate) The Locator.  But I’m still going to check out the pilot, if for no other reason than to see whether my suspicions are right and Fox is doing this new show to capitalize on the fan base for Lee Child’s Jack Reacher (another ex-military cop who gets mixed up in dicey situations).

If you’re interested, you can check out something I wrote about Bones over here.
