Reading the Screen: The Thin Man
Posted by: David Pitt

a-mystery-month-tag6In case you didn’t hear the news, Johnny Depp and his Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides director Rob Marshall are working on a movie based on Dashiell Hammett’s 1934 novel The Thin Man.

You might be tempted to think there were a series of Thin Man novels. But it was a stand-alone (Hammett’s final novel, as a matter of fact), and it was the 1934 William Powell/Myrna Loy movie that spawned the sequels — which got, in my opinion, farther and farther away from what Hammett had intended when he wrote the book.

Depp will be playing the wealthy, glamorous┬áNick Charles (the book’s thin man himself, of course, is the murder victim, Clyde Wynant), and I don’t think anyone has been set to play Nick’s wife, Nora — although some reports say Rachel Weisz, Academy Award winner for The Constant Gardner, is being considered for the role. I think she’d be an excellent choice, especially if you remember she also played Evelyn in the first two Mummy movies.

What do you think? Do we need a new Thin Man movie?
