Post Time for the Nobel Prize
Posted by: Bill Ott

It’s time to get your bets down on the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature. Ladbrokes, the U.K. gambling company that posts odds on just about everything, sees the favorites this way: Syrian poet Adonis is the favorite at 4-1, with Swedish author Thomas Transtromer at 9-2, Thomas Pynchon at 10-1, and Haruki Murakami at 16-1. Betting with my heart, I’d go for Murakami in a minute, but on the theory that the most obscure author (at least to American readers) always wins, it’s got to be a dead heat between Adonis and Transtromer (though fellow Booklister Ian Chipman says he read Transtromer in college). On the other hand, if you’re the type that bets horses on their cool names, it’s got to be Adonis. Stay tuned for the results (and, one hopes, a picture of the winner wearing the traditional roses).
