Tumultuous Awards Season!
Posted by: Sarah Hunter

This fall has brought a lot of controversy to book awards—accidentally nominated authors, rage over readability—my Google alert email was certainly exciting to read every morning! Here’s a roundup of some book award news worth noting:

Lauren Myracle withdrew her book Shine from its place on the National Book Award shortlist (at their request). The National Book Foundation will make a donation to the Matthew Shephard Foundation at Myracle’s request. You can read our coverage of the shortlisted National Book Award titles here.

Enough writers were angry over the emphasis on readability in this year’s Booker Prize judging criteria that they’re starting their own award called “The Literature Prize” (for now). Still no word yet on funding, though it has garnered some impressive support: John Banville (a Booker winner himself), Nicole Krauss, and David Mitchell are so far on board.Don’t forget to read our coverage of the Booker shortlist and the ultimate winner (which will be reviewed in our November 15th issue!)

While not controversial news, the announcement of the Chautauqua Prize is certainly exciting. The renowned literary institution—their book club has been running since 1878!— will award the prize for the first time next summer, and the winner will receive $7,500 and a one-week summer residency at the Chautauqua institution.
