Closing the Book on 2012 Oscar Winners

When the 2012 Oscar nominations were announced, many people noted how many of the nominess had been inspired by books and short stories—surely a feel-good testament to the power of the printed page. But the winners tell a different story: not even the magic of Harry Potter could keep the literary A-list from being largely shut out. In fact, without the five nods for Martin Scorsese’s adaptation of Brian Selznick’s The Invention of Hugo Cabret, literary adaptations would notch a measly three wins. And all of Hugo‘s honors came for technical and artistic achievement, not storytelling.
At least that cute movie about flying books won Best Animated Short—even if it wasn’t based on a book.
