Because comics love you and want to be friends, every year they give themselves out for free on the first Saturday of May. Now I’m no forecaster, but I’m guessing that the first Saturday of May is happening on this very Saturday, May 5, so you owe it to yourself and especially your kids to head over to your local shop and pick up some freebies (you should also go other times and buy things because the economy needs you and not buying comics is Anti-American). Here’s a link to a tool to find participating stores in your ‘hood, and here’s a handy list of some comics that will be free for the taking.
It’s a mixed bag, but the big thing to notice is that the folks at Archaia have outdone themselves this year. Instead of offering a smattering of free comic book issues, they’re offering a free hardcover book packed with top-notch stuff. A whole book! Free! As in, $0. In this little treasure box is a new Mouse Guard story from David Petersen, a Jim Henson Labyrinthe story written by Ted Naifeh, a dapper story by The Return of the Dapper Men‘s Jim McCann and Janet K. Lee, a Rust short from Royden Lepp, a Cursed Pirate Girl piece by Jeremy Bastain, and a Cow Boy yarn from Nate Cosby and Chris Eliopoulos. That’s like (*counts fingers*) six free comics in one fantastic package!
So, what are you waiting for? Trick question! You’re waiting for Saturday, so sit right where you are until then. Or do whatever–I’m not the boss of you. The point is: free comics.
