Jennifer Egan’s “Black Box,” Tweet by Tweet
Posted by: Donna Seaman

I’ve been a Jennifer Egan fan since her first book, The Invisible Circus, came out in 1995, so I was thrilled at the triumph of her most recent novel, A Visit from the Goon Squad. It was Booklist‘s 2011 Top of the List, and went on to win the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award. Rumor has it an HBO series is in the works.

Egan’s fascination with technology and how it affects us in both obvious and covert ways is her great theme, and she extended her inquiry in Goon Squad stylistically by writing one chapter in the form of a PowerPoint presentation. So it’s not surprising that this exceptionally talented writer decided to serialize a story, ”Black Box,” on Twitter. Or that the New Yorker, where the story will be published in full in print in the June 4 and 11 science fiction issue, is hosting the micro-installments on its blog, Page-Turner

New mini-episodes begin appearing each night at 8:00 EST pm.  The run is about halfway through. I’ve been reading “Black Box,” and will share my thoughts at its conclusion. In the meantime, all that’s been posted so far is available at Page-Turner and, of course, you can join in and read it live.  We can compare notes later in the week.
