Mo Yan wins the Nobel Prize in Literature

The results are in, and this year’s favorite for the Nobel Prize in Literature will have to wait another year. Not that anyone would begrudge the acclaimed Mo Yan the win—not only did he win the Nobel Prize in Literature this morning, but he’s the first Chinese author to receive the coveted accolade. The Nobel Prize committee has this to say about his work:
Through a mixture of fantasy and reality, historical and social perspectives, Mo Yan has created a world reminiscent in its complexity of those in the writings of William Faulkner and Gabriel García Márquez, at the same time finding a departure point in old Chinese literature and in oral tradition.
