Karen Russell is a genius
Posted by: Katharine

This morning fiction writer Karen Russell was announced as one of 24 MacArthur “genius” fellows.  The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation bestows this annual, no-strings attached award to “talented individuals who have shown extraordinary originality and dedication in their creative pursuits and a marked capacity for self-direction.”

Booklist couldn’t find a better way to describe Russell, who was an Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction 2012 Finalist for her novel Swamplandia!. Not convinced of her extraordinary originality and dedication? Watch her acceptance speech where she not only overcomes technology woes, but lauds the power of libraries and librarians (and in the most charming and sincere of ways):

And if you still need persuading, we’ll let these starred reviews do the talking:  St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves, Swamplanida!, Vampires in the Lemon Grove.

Congratulations, Karen Russell!
