I think two years of constantly seeing one or the other of them being read on the bus went by until I finally figured out that they were, in fact, two different books. I saw the name Russell Banks- I am currently reading (listening) to The Reserve and can't believe he's the same person who wrote Rule of the Bone and The Sweet Hereafter. In his first interview since his second Oprah appearance, he rehashes the whole affair with Vanity Fair’s Evgenia Peretz (”James Frey’s Morning After“). As much as I’ve always believed that it doesn’t matter whether writers are personally likeable–great art has often been created by jerks, and vice versa–well, he comes off as pretty hard to like. We were visited in February 2008 by the Lonely Planet researcher who was updating the Belize guide. His name is Joshua Samuel Brown, I know this because he presented me with his card which says on it,"Lonely Planet writers and staff do not accept discounts or payments in exchange for positive coverage of any sort". He was professional and diligent. I used to own a bar in Antigua, Guatemala, and it is amazing how many people work for the Lonely Planet and want free drinks. Please do not be so naive that you believe someone is from the Lonely Planet because they say they are. Having said that, I am sure the Guides vary in quality.
